Oregon Modifications to NFHS Two Man Mechanics
Prior to 2006 many Oregon Associations had modified certain NFHS mechanics. This caused a multitude of problems when officials from different associations were combined to work games. In 2006 the OAOA decided to provide "Oregon Modifications" to certain NFHS mechanics in an effort to standardize mechanics throughout the state. The goal was "One Rule, One Interpretation, One Mechanic". All Oregon Associations are directed to use the NFHS mechanics as outlined in the NFHS Umpires Manual, with the following modifications:
Bases Empty
Outfield Coverage
- NFHS: U1 has left field and centerfield turning away from the field.
- Oregon Modified: U1 only has left field; U2 has center and right fields.
Infield Catch Coverage
- NFHS: U1 has all fly balls to the left side of the infield.
- Oregon Modified: U1 has the Third baseman and Shortstop going left, back or in. Second baseman going left or in. First baseman going left or in. Pitcher going left. U2 has the Shortstop going right. The Second baseman right and back. The First baseman right and back. The Pitcher going right.
Base Hit to the Outfield, Extra Bases
- NFHS: U2 has batter/runner to second base. U1 has runner at third base.
- Oregon Modified: U2 has all the batter/runner at all the bases.
Runner At First Base
Plays Within The Infield
- NFHS: U1 has plays at Third base on the "second play" within the infield.
- Oregon Modified: U2 has all the plays at first, second and third bases.
Runners At First and Second Base
Plays Within The Infield
- NFHS: U1 has call at Third base if first play is at First or Second base.
- Oregon Modified: U2 has the "second play" at Third base.
Runner At Second Base
Fly Balls
- NFHS: On fly balls to left field or center field, U1 moves to third for any subsequent play at Third base (i. e., runner tagging from Second base and going to Third base). U2 moves to take any subsequent play at Home plate.
- Oregon Modification: U2 lines up the "catch" AND the "tag by the runner" and has any play at Third base. U1 stays at Home plate.
Runner At Second and Third Base
Clean Base Hit
- NFHS: U1 moves up the Third Baseline, watches R1 touch Home plate then gets into position to move to Third base or retreat to Home plate.
- Oregon Modification: U1 has all plays at Home Plate and U2 has all plays on all the bases.
